Who is Blavel

 

Blavel is the pseudonym of Claris Vaes, born in 1993, from Arlon, Belgium.

 

A true enthusiast, she has always been involved in sculpture, painting and illustration.

 

She took the art option during her high school years.

 

She mainly does dark-fantasy and heroic-fantasy in a semi-realistic style.  She can be associated with the “Fantasy artist” community (artists specializing in the production of works linked to imaginary worlds such as Faérun, Golarion or middle earth to name only the most famous. )

 

Since 2017, she has been practicing her art professionally.

Expertise and fields

Character-design:
There is more to creating a character than simply drawing a person in period clothing. A professional character designer brings a whole lot more thought into the making than one might first think, so that, at a glance, the audience who discovers the character understands who he is, his mind, past but also how he is coherent in the universe he is supposed to inhabit.

 

Monster-design:
This exercise is similar in itself to the character-design mentioned above, with the difference that the difficulty is to remain coherent while emphasizing that the monster is an anomaly in the universe where it evolves.

 

Paint :

To any layperson, Blavel's paintings resemble works of concept art but, on the contrary, when the artist frees herself from her commission work to explore a more personal side, we quickly find ourselves plunged into a tortuous world. and rich, fruit of the thoughts and reflections of the author. We meet enigmatic gods revealing incomprehensible secrets, flowers that only grow in dreams or huts carved into the rock while the oceans float in the skies.

 

Sculpture:
Blavel's sculptures are inspired by popular imagination, folklore, tales and legends of Belgian heritage. They are the materialization of the invisible, from the small sprites of everyday life to the great elders that even Lovecraft would not have dared to dream of.

 

Fresco:
The latest discipline to arrive in the artist's range of activities, frescoes were above all a challenge, that of exploding the limits of her art. The works of the artist have long been confined to small formats whose diagonal only exceeded one meter in length on rare occasions, now the mural works of the young frescoist are measured in square meters.
